We mapped all overstorey Protea plants (19 species) and estimated the temporal variation in standing crop of nectar sugar for each mapped plant.</para>
<keywordSet><keyword>cape sugarbird promerops cafer</keyword><keyword>fynbos cape floristic region</keyword><keyword>orange-breasted sunbird anthobaphes violacae</keyword><keyword>plant-pollinator interactions</keyword><keyword>protea proteaceae</keyword><keyword>south africa</keyword></keywordSet><intellectualRights><para>Obtain permission from data set owner(s)</para></intellectualRights><coverage><geographicCoverage><geographicDescription>Western Cape, South Africa</geographicDescription><boundingCoordinates><westBoundingCoordinate>18.8314</westBoundingCoordinate><eastBoundingCoordinate>19.5228</eastBoundingCoordinate><northBoundingCoordinate>-33.6275</northBoundingCoordinate><southBoundingCoordinate>-34.6139</southBoundingCoordinate></boundingCoordinates></geographicCoverage><temporalCoverage><rangeOfDates><beginDate><calendarDate>2012-04-10</calendarDate></beginDate><endDate><calendarDate>2012-07-27</calendarDate></endDate></rangeOfDates></temporalCoverage><taxonomicCoverage><generalTaxonomicCoverage /><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Promerops cafer</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Anthobaphes violace</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea burchellii</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea coronata</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea compacta</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea cynaroides</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Proea eximia</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea laurifolia</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea lepidocarpodendron</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea longifolia</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea lorifolia</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea mundii</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Proeta nana</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea neriifolia</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea nitida</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea obtusifolia</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea punctata</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea repens</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Protea susannae</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification></taxonomicCoverage></coverage><contact><individualName><givenName>Baptiste</givenName><surName>Schmid</surName></individualName><organizationName>BiK-F</organizationName><address /><electronicMailAddress>baptiste.schmid@alumni.ethz.ch</electronicMailAddress></contact><methods><methodStep><description><section>
<title>population size of nectarivorous birds using point count survey and frequency of bird visits to plants usingfocal plants (patch) observation</title>
<para>Avian population sizes were estimated with repeated point count survey (three point counts per study site). We used the maximal number of simoultaneously observed individuals within 30 m distance from the observer during the 10 minutes point count.
Per-plant visitation rate were obtained from 45 min observation of focal plants at least 20 m from the observer. We used only legetimate foraging events (i.e. bird visit was not recorded if bird robbed nectar from the side of the inflorescence).</para>
