We carried out exclosure experiments that allowed or excluded access to seeds by vertebrates in three habitat types (forest interior, degraded habitat close to and degraded habitat far from the forest margin) in a spatial block design at six sites. We offered a total of 1,440 seeds (both with and without an aril) and marked half of them with a thread to follow their fate after 48 h and after 1 month.</para>
<keywordSet><keyword>deforestation</keyword><keyword>exclusion</keyword><keyword>secondary dispersal</keyword><keyword>seed germination</keyword><keyword>seed predation</keyword><keyword>seedling recruitment</keyword><keyword>tropical forest</keyword></keywordSet><coverage><geographicCoverage><geographicDescription>Bolivia, La Paz, Sud Yungas, Chulumani</geographicDescription><boundingCoordinates><westBoundingCoordinate>-67.52</westBoundingCoordinate><eastBoundingCoordinate>-67.52</eastBoundingCoordinate><northBoundingCoordinate>-16.4</northBoundingCoordinate><southBoundingCoordinate>-16.4</southBoundingCoordinate></boundingCoordinates></geographicCoverage><temporalCoverage><rangeOfDates><beginDate><calendarDate>2012-02-02</calendarDate></beginDate><endDate><calendarDate>2012-03-31</calendarDate></endDate></rangeOfDates></temporalCoverage><taxonomicCoverage><generalTaxonomicCoverage /><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Genus</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>Clusia</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification><taxonomicClassification><taxonRankName>Species</taxonRankName><taxonRankValue>trochiformis</taxonRankValue></taxonomicClassification></taxonomicCoverage></coverage><contact><individualName><givenName>Matthias</givenName><surName>Schleuning</surName></individualName><address><deliveryPoint>Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) &amp; Senckenberg Gesellschaft fuer Naturforschung, Senckenberganlage 25, D-60325 Frankfurt (Main), Germany</deliveryPoint></address><electronicMailAddress>Matthias.Schleuning@senckenberg.de</electronicMailAddress></contact><contact><individualName><givenName>Silvia C.</givenName><surName>Gallegos</surName></individualName><address><deliveryPoint>Institute of Biology/Geobotany and Botanical Garden, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Am Kirchtor 1, D-06108 Halle, Germany</deliveryPoint></address></contact><contact><individualName><givenName>Isabell</givenName><surName>Hensen</surName></individualName><address><deliveryPoint>Institute of Biology/Geobotany and Botanical Garden, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Am Kirchtor 1, D-06108 Halle, Germany</deliveryPoint></address></contact><dataTable id="1391620123569" scope="document"> <entityName>SGallegos_SDP.csv</entityName><physical id="1391615285265" scope="document"> <objectName>Gallegos_SDP.csv</objectName><size unit="byte">152873</size><dataFormat> <textFormat> <numHeaderLines>1</numHeaderLines><recordDelimiter>#x0A</recordDelimiter><attributeOrientation>column</attributeOrientation><simpleDelimited> <fieldDelimiter>;</fieldDelimiter></simpleDelimited></textFormat></dataFormat><distribution><online><url>ecogrid://knb/sgallegos.11.1</url></online><access authSystem="knb" order="allowFirst"><allow><principal>public</principal><permission>read</permission></allow></access></distribution></physical><attributeList> <attribute id="1391620123570" scope="document"> <attributeName>Number</attributeName><attributeDefinition>Number of offered seeds (correlative from 1 to 1440)</attributeDefinition><measurementScale> <ratio> <unit> <customUnit>Code</customUnit></unit><numericDomain> <numberType>natural</numberType></numericDomain></ratio></measurementScale></attribute><attribute id="1391620123571" scope="document"> <attributeName>SITE</attributeName><attributeDefinition>The first letters of the name of the site</attributeDefinition><measurementScale> <nominal> <nonNumericDomain> <enumeratedDomain> <codeDefinition> <code>VB</code><definition>Villa Belen</definition></codeDefinition><codeDefinition> <code>ANT</code><definition>Antena</definition></codeDefinition><codeDefinition> <code>CHI</code><definition>Chimasi</definition></codeDefinition><codeDefinition> <code>ARC</code><definition>Arriba de casa</definition></codeDefinition><codeDefinition> <code>RIN</code><definition>Rinconada</definition></codeDefinition><codeDefinition> <code>LAM</code><definition>Lambate</definition></codeDefinition></enumeratedDomain></nonNumericDomain></nominal></measurementScale></attribute><attribute id="1391620123572" scope="document"> <attributeName>BLOCK</attributeName><attributeDefinition>The location of each block (includes SITE-HABIT).
