<title>Land use land cover change</title>
<para>The elaborate maps were incorporated into multi-date geographic information system (GIS) using ArcGIS 10 software. An overlaying analysis was performed in order to assess pathways of change observed among the three periods analyzed, and locate sites where these changes occurred.
Transition probability matrices were elaborated for the periods 1975&#150;1990, 1990&#150;2010 and 1975&#150;2010 in order to describe the change of state of each land cover class.
In order to explore the possible future evolution of land degradation, an analysis was conducted based on the annualized transition matrices, assuming that the LUCC follow a Markovian dynamic</para>
