<title>Soil data analysis</title>
<para>Soil samples were taken on each plant species inventory plot (see dataset accordingly). Per plot, five soil samples were taken in the depth of the main herb rooting layer (0-20 cm) and mixed to one mixed sample. In the laboratory, pH (ratio 1:2,5) and conductivity (ratio 1:5) were analyzed in H2O-dest. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) as well as exchangeable calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), aluminum (Al) and potassium (K) were determined with unbuffered 0,1M BaCl2 using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Nitrogen (N), carbon (C) and the C/N-ratio were analyzed by dry combustion/gas chromatography (Carlo Erba ANA 1500).
The skeleton part of each sample was measured in the field on dry samples. Sand was measured by wet sieving the samples. Silt and clay were measured using the pipette method. Phosphorus was analyzed following the rules of the international soil reference and information center. Both, phosphorus as well as the actual grain size were analyzed in the soil laboratory of the University of Ouagadougou. </para>
