Pollination experiments on Protea species, Western Cape, South Africa

We conducted pollination experiments on 7 Protea species (Protea compacta, P. eximia, P. laurifolia, P. longifolia, P. magnifica, P. punctata, P. repens) in the Cape Fynbos, Cape Floristic Region. We used cages (20mm mesh size) to exclude avian pollinators from inflorescences, bags (1mm mesh size) to exclude all pollinators, hand-pollination with out-cross-pollen on bagged inflorescences and hand-pollination with self-pollen on bagged inflorescences. We assessed the proportion of fertile seeds produced under each treatment and also the seed mass and germination rates. I also compiled literature records on exclosure-experiments on Protea species to conduct meta-analyses, relating the effect size of avian pollination with flower traits of the same species.
