Green is not always good: Vegetation and rengeland health in the Tuul River watershed

Dataset presents data from a field study of vegetation conditions in the Tuul watershed, contributing to a better understanding of steppe community composition in Mongolia’s core region, particularly in central-northern Mongolia. We surveyed vegetation of rangelands, with species cover, forage availability, forage quality (crude protein content, crude fat, NDF and ADF) and soil chemical properties (ph, EC, C, N, P, ) of top soil (0-5cm depth). The aim of the study was to i) survey state-of-art of the rangeland, ii) changes of vegetation compared to 40 years ago comparing to Hilbig et al., (2000) in the same vegetation type and region, and iii) compare MODIS NDVI data with field-based vegetation cover. The project was funded by the GIZ between June 2024 and April 2025.
