Questionnaires on economic contribution of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) to rural household revenues in two villages of Burkina Faso (study sites 5 and 7)

Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) contribute significantly to local livelihoods for subsistence as well as for cash income from NTFP sales. To determine the economic contribution of NTFPs to rural household revenues we conducted structured household interviews containing closed and open questions. 150 household interviews have been conducted in the two villages Nagré and Kompienbiga in South-east Burkina Faso in the northern Soudanien zone. In both villages three ethnic groups were considered: the autochthon Gourmantché, the migrated Mossi, and the migrated Fulani. Interviews have been conducted separately with the household head and his first wife. They have been posed different questions due to prominent gender roles in the rural areas of West Africa. The questionnaires comprise general information of the interviewee (age, number of household members, religion, education, polygamy) and on different sources of income (cash and subsistence income). Different income sources are distinguished: income from food crops, livestock income, off-farm income, and income from NTFPs (wild foods, firewood and tooth twigs, fodder, and medicinal plants).
